10 Years Endowed Professorship Analytische Röntgenphysik

On 17 January 2019, the initiators, sponsors and employees of the Stiftung Analytische Röntgenphysik celebrated the tenth anniversary of the foundation and the associated appointment of Prof. Dr. Birgit Kanngießer to the Institute of Optics and Atomic Physics (IOAP) at the Technische Universität Berlin in 2009.

Nicolas Zimmer, CEO of the Technologiestiftung Berlin, was pleased with the success of the foundation and underlined the commitment of industrial companies to research and science: "Small and medium-sized enterprises should also be engaged in research and development. The Stiftung Analytische Röntgenphysik is a good example of how this can be achieved."

Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen, President of the TU Berlin, emphasized the successful establishment of the endowed professorship and the outstanding scientific achievements of the working group: "With the seven-year comsuming foundation designed by the Technologiestiftung Berlin, it was possible for the university to establish an endowed professorship for this purpose. Prof. Dr. Birgit Kanngießer was finally appointed to this position. Due to the excellent performance of the research group, 13 small and medium-sized companies came together again after the first seven years of 2016 to finance the work of the foundation until 2021.

At the ceremony, the employees of Prof. Dr. Kanngießer's working group presented some projects from previous years. In the field of scientific infrastructure, these included the establishment of the Berlin Laboratory for innovative X-ray Technologies (BLiX) as a cooperative project between the Technische Universität Berlin and the Max Born Institute (Leibniz Institute). In BLiX, the development of so-called "confocal X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy", a method for determining the elemental composition of metals, glasses, ceramics and other materials in three dimensions, was also promoted. This allows, for example, the mineral distribution of seed material enriched with nutrients to be investigated. Prof. Dr. Birgit Kanngießer, who now holds a regular professorship at the Institute of Optics and Atomic Physics, thanked all donors for their support: "I was always particularly impressed by the commitment of the companies to young scientists. Above all, they provide students with good insights into practice without expecting exclusive results. This practical experience is very valuable for the training of young scientists."
