The Faculty II puts a strong emphasis on research and is a major component of the network of research facilities in the region Berlin-Brandenburg. Mathematics and Natural Sciences consider theirselves as fields of fundamental research. Nonetheless does the research profile of the faculty differ cosiderably from those of the other two universities in Berlin.

Mathematics at the TU Berlin is highly oriented towards Engineering. Physics ilustrates its applicability amongst others with the Institute for Optics and Atom Physics, the Institute for Solid Body Physics and the Centre for Nanophotonics with its cleanrooms as research facilities, that find counterparts in only few, mostly technical, universities. In Chemistry the Technical Chemistry as an applied component of research and as a link to engineering has always been of great importance.

Therefor all three fields of research and education of Faculty II demonstrate unique features amongst the three universities of Berlin. The orientation is consistent with the coordinations from the Hochschulstrukturpläne 2004.
