Doctoral Studies in General
Students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in Germany need to be aware that for the most part they need to find a supervisor themselves before applying for admission!

Doctorate
The doctorate is the acquisition of a doctoral degree at a University as part of an examination process. The following doctoral regulations apply to Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences:
Faculty II – Mathematics and Narural Sciences awards the following doctoral degrees:
- Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Doctor of Engineering Sciences (Dr.-Ing.)
Requirements:
- master degree or equivalent degree in the subject area of the respective doctoral degree
- preparation of a doctoral thesis (dissertation) and oral examination (scientific defense)

Doctoral Committee:
Please see § 6 of the Doctoral Regulations for Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences for information on the doctoral committee and also note our info sheet.
Dissertation:
vorgelegte Dissertation = submitted dissertation
genehmigte Dissertation = accepted dissertation (after the scientific defense; version that will be published)
Scientific Defense:
Note the invitation period of 14 days before the date of the scientific defense. The invitation will be issued and send by the doctoral degree office.
Attention: As of April, numerous restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic will no longer apply, since the legal pandemic emergency situation is no longer in effect. This eliminates the possibility of scientific defenses in online format. Hybrid formats are still possible, if presence on campus is not possible due to force majeure, see § 8 (2a) of the Doctoral Regulations for Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Scientific Defenses are open to the University Public. TU members are invited to participate as guests. Current dates of scientific defenses can be found here.
Publication:
The dissertation must be made accessible to the scientific public in an appropriate manner within 12 months following the scientific defense.
