Prof. Dr. Masaaki Fujji from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan was awarded one of the renowned Alexander von Humboldt Research Prizes. With this award, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation honours outstanding scientists who are at the peak of their academic careers and who have achieved outstanding scientific achievements in their field. He was nominated by Professor Dr. Otto Dopfer of the Institute of Optics and Atomic Physics, at whose research group Professor Fujii will continue to pursue his research in the field of laser spectroscopy. Prof. Fujii is known for his groundbreaking studies on reaction dynamics based on the application of vibrational spectroscopy to solvated clusters. He developed laser spectroscopic techniques to study solvation dynamics in isolated molecular clusters in real time. His goal is to understand solvent effects in chemical reaction mechanisms at the molecular level. During his stay at the TU Berlin, he will continue his previous studies on solvation dynamics at the molecular level and focus on the mechanisms of molecular effects in biological systems. He is focusing, among other aspects, on the dynamics of water molecules that are located as "biological water" at the interface to peptides, proteins and other biomolecules. These studies directly improve the understanding of the important role of water for the structure and function of biological macromolecules. As another line of research, he is investigating in detail the interaction of neutrotransmitters (such as dopamine or serotonin) with corresponding receptor proteins in order to understand the neuronal function of these important messengers in the human brain.

We congratulate the award winner and wish him a successful and fruitful stay at the TU Berlin!
