Doctoral Studies in General

Students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in Germany need to be aware that for the most part they need to find a supervisor themselves before applying for admission!

A good overview what steps are necessary to become a doctoral student in Germany can be found on the following website:

Doctoral research at Faculty II

The doctoral degree is the University's principal research degree for graduate students and is regulated by a common set of doctoral regulations for all faculties.

Doctoral regulations as of 05 February 2014 [4]

The formal requirement for admission to doctoral studies at the Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences at TU Berlin is a master’s degree (or equivalent) in the area in which you plan to write your dissertation. Completion of the doctorate requires writing a dissertation and taking an oral examination (disputation).

General enrollment information for doctoral students [5]

The Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences awards two different types of doctoral degrees:

Doktor der Naturwissenschaften (Dr. rer. nat.) – Doctorate in Natural Sciences

Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften (Dr.-Ing.) – Doctorate in Engineering

 Steps required:

1) Please inform the Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences as soon as possible of your plans to begin a doctorate with the “Admission to the Doctoral Procedure”.

 2) Once you finished your dissertation you need to apply for the “Application for the Doctoral Examination Procedure”at least 4 months before the date of your disputation!!!!
